Sometimes, the hardest part is simply starting. No big plan, no perfect conditions—just you making the choice to move forward. It doesn’t have to be perfect, polished, or even make sense. Starting can be messy, awkward, uncomfortable, and very unpredictable. And guess what? That’s okay. It’s exactly the way it should be!
As I’ve told my kids, you have to be uncomfortable before you’re comfortable. All masters were once beginners. It’s part of the process. Whether it’s starting a workout, creating a new habit, or shifting your perspective, action beats perfection every time. Whether it’s setting up a few dumbbells in a corner of the garage or figuring out your workout routine in your new personal space—it’s all about taking that first step.
So, let go of the idea that everything needs to be “just right.” Trust the process. I remember listening to a seminar where one of the key messages was, "take messy action." I loved this. Messy action is still action, and it’s enough to get you moving.
I’ll be honest—I’m still working on this myself. Taking my own advice isn’t always easy, but when I do, I’m reminded that just starting is better than not starting at all. Every step forward counts, even the wobbly ones.
No fancy equipment needed—just you making the choice to create your own space and begin. Your garage gym doesn’t need to be perfect, polished, or resemble a commercial gym—at all.
You don’t need everything to be "just right." The beauty of creating your own home gym is that there are no rules. It’s a space that’s just for you, built around your needs, not anyone else's expectations or those of any other gym. Whether it's a cluttered corner or a sleek, organized setup, your gym is yours. It's your happy place. I know it’s mine. It doesn’t need to be perfect to work.
Once you get started, you’ll find your rhythm. You’ll learn what equipment works best for you, what routines feel good, and what vibe motivates you to keep going. And even when things don’t go according to plan—when the garage floor is a mess, or you get distracted by something else—it’s still progress. The key is to keep going and make that space your own—and own it.
So, create your space, own it, and embrace it—in all its imperfections, glorious dirt, spider webs, and strength! Your garage gym will grow with you—and as long as you start, you’re already on the right track.
Love,
The GGL
